Last month I had the opportunity to be a part of something pretty incredible. Erik contacted me and explained that he would be flying in to Chicago from San Francisco to propose to his now-fiancé Claire, who was in town on business (and didn’t expect a thing!). After years of long-distance dating between several cities, Erik chose Chicago to propose because it’s where they had their first date four years ago, when he drove the seven hours from Nashville to visit Claire. The look on her face when she saw Erik standing in front of the skyline was absolutely perfect.

The day was cold, damp, and cloudy – and there were even flurries of snow when I first me Erik on the scene. As soon as that ring went on Claire’s finger, clouds parted and we saw bits of blue sky – and eventually sunshine! It was all so picturesque, and the joy was overwhelming. Photographing a proposal is hands-down one of the most rewarding things I do in my work.

Quick sidenote: if you’re reading this, and you’re planning to propose, I urge you to consider hiring a professional to capture it for you. The moment will be over before you know it, and the photos are always worth looking through. Your fiancé will thank you 🙂

After some portraits around the skyline with a certain new piece of jewelry, Erik’s partners in crime arrived at the scene – his sister and Claire’s best friend, who were responsible for helping to coordinate everything. They had along with them Erik and Claire’s pooch Cash, who had flown in alongside Erik for the big surprise. These three can really keep a secret! It truly was a family affair.

Erik and Claire – I am so honored to have been a part of this special moment. Congratulations to you both, I wish you nothing but happiness in your future together.
