Documentary wedding photographer Emma of Emma Mullins Photography in Chicago, Illinois

Hellooo, world!

I’m Emma: beer nerd, cat-whisperer, and documentary wedding photographer. I’ve been helping couples relive their wedding memories since 2014.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I currently reside in Chicago with my designer-turned-handyman spouse and our two spunky felines. When I’m not photographing couples in love, I’m either hanging with these three or traveling some place new!

A Few of My Favorite Things:
  • Black coffee
  • Road trips
  • Singing loudly to the radio while driving
  • Belgian beer
  • The Green Bay Packers
  • My little fam (Jeremy, Rex and Miike)
  • Re-watching episodes of Schitt’s Creek
  • Halloween (the holiday – not the movie. Okay, the movie’s pretty good too.)
My Approach

My favorite thing about working with couples is learning THEIR story. It’s always exciting to learn how two people met… and then decided to spend the rest of their lives together! We’ll get to know each other throughout the process, and it doesn’t stop on wedding day. I want to show up with hugs and handshakes – not as just another vendor.

If you’re looking for stiff, unnatural posing, I’m not your girl. Expect a mix of candid moments and contemporary portraiture while still being able to enjoy time with your guests. My approach allows couples to feel totally comfortable in front of the camera (it’s the number one thing mentioned in my Reviews!).

Maybe you’re planning the wedding of your dreams, or maybe you cringe at the thought of being center of attention. Either way, your wedding day represents YOU and the awesome, ridiculous, beautiful, unique, sometimes-messy-but-oh-so-worth-it love you share together. Your photos should be no exception.

Emma Mullins Photography embraces diversity and inclusivity. We are LGBTQ+ friendly and happy to serve humans of every background, gender and identity.

Summer Elopement at Starved Rock Lodge – Melanie & Spencer

Believe it or not, Melanie and Spencer planned their summer Starved Rock Lodge wedding in a matter of weeks. I first met these two in late February at one of our mutual favorite coffee shops in Logan Square. Shortly after then, it was clear that their original wedding plans would need to be altered. When they told me they wanted to get married this year no matter what, I was so, so excited 🙂

After exploring several different options, Spencer and Melanie decided to elope in August at Starved Rock State Park in the presence of their immediate families. Their mutual love of the outdoors – plus the fact that they got engaged on a mountain top – made this the perfect choice! I am especially partial to the colorful summer vibe (note Melanie’s bouquet and Spencer’s custom suit!). This aligned with their wedding vision from the beginning, described by Melanie as “colorful and filled with love and laughter.”

“We hope our wedding will be colorful and filled with love and laughter.”

Melanie and Spencer tied the knot in an intimate ceremony, complete with personal vows, Jewish traditions, and a bubble-gun sendoff. Spencer even surprised Melanie with recorded messages from their siblings who could not be in attendance. Oh – and you may recognize the handsome officiant! Jeremy was happy to tag along and perform the ceremony, and we were happy to have him.

We waved goodbye to family and headed to Illinois Canyon for some epic elopement photos! A summer storm the week before had us prepared for anything… including hopping over fallen trees and puddles of mud! Special thanks to Park Superintendent Alvin for helping make these photos possible.
